Introduction to Geocomputing

Americas, 29 November to 3 December 2021

Agile’s famous Intro to Geocomputing course is now 100% live and virtual, so you can take it from your home or place of work, anywhere in the world. This class has timing for the Americas.

The Geocomputing course starts with basic Python syntax, and works all the way through writing functions, reading files, and making scientific plots. It is fully hands-on, with lots of geoscience examples using real industry data. The course is suitable for both new and intermediate programmers — there are no prerequisites and everyone is welcome!

The Intro to Geocomputing curriculum will be spread over 5 half-days, as follows:

Day 1 On the first day we will meet Python's syntax and built-in functions, using the command line, scripts, and Jupyter Notebooks. At the end of Day 1, you’ll know how to run a Python program, and how to do maths.

Day 2 We'll meet more of Python’s syntax, and get comfortable with its various data structures, including NumPy arrays. We’ll also make some plots! By the end of the day, you’ll have seen most of the language.

Day 3 We will meet functions, and learn how they help organize our code. You’ll get comfortable with converting geoscience concepts, like Gardner’s equation or Vshale, into Python code.

Day 4 Plotting is the meal of the day, as we dive into the wonderful world of Matplotlib. We’ll see how well logs and seismic data are represented in Python, and learn how to make scientific visualizations of them.

Day 5 Scientists need to know how to read data files, so today we pull all the concepts together to read formation tops from a collection of data files to make a map.
